Science Nights are effective, inspirational

Why bring Family Science Nights to your school?

A 2008 report on Family Science Nights (FSN) at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum found that the one-time events “enhanced students’ understanding of the nature of scientific exploration and the work of scientists… increased interest in space-science related careers… allowed students to see that being a scientist is an attainable goal to which they themselves might aspire… FSN may have an important role in increasing student awareness of potential careers in science and helping them to understand the importance of scientific discovery.” Our Family Science Night displays connect the science they are learning to their wider world, in terms of future careers and possibilities. Our goal is to inspire the next generation of innovators.

A 2011 Report by the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute of middle schoolers participating in Family Science Programs found that “Seventy percent of students stated that participating had increased their interest in pursuing a career in science,” and “The involvement of a caring adult is one promising practice that is frequently mentioned in the literature… it could be useful for other initiatives to consider integrating a parent component into their STEM outreach and education activities.” iSchool’s Family Science Nights are pleasure for children and adults alike.
