Chain Reactions came into iSchool’s curriculum by way of a student request to learn more about Rube Goldberg… and they are a hit!  Chain Reactions are fun and teach basic science concepts such experimentation, observation, energy, and Newton’s laws.  It’s also a great activity for learning and practicing nearly all of our 21st Century Social and Emotional Life Skills. Chain Reactions requires creativity, embracing failure, appreciation for materials, critical thinking, and a Growth Mindset.  Because the activity is easily personalized, children become quite invested in the activity and want to continue – or at the very least, document the fruits of their work. All of our programs feature activities like this that children love and that combine Creative STEM with 21st Century Life Skills.

You can have fun with your child at home. Use all sorts of materials – boxes, books, balls, blocks (you name it!) – to create a Chain Reaction.  To make it a Rube Goldberg “machine,” set up the Chain Reaction to accomplish a small task. These videos have great inspiration:

Children also like perfecting challenging problems such as these Chain Reactions made with Popsicle Sticks:
